In Betty Smith's A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Francie Nolan and her family have a problem with many inexpensive and mental hardships in Brooklyn in the early 1900's. Her mom, Katie, and her father, Johnny, marry and have kids at an extremely young age, leading to their family's fate to get doomed immediately. Francie, the older with the two children, provides her single mother's hard-work ethic, and her father's sentimentality and creativeness. Through Francie's fear, humiliation, compassion, misery, woe, anguish, pride, and disillusionment through the novel, she becomes the strong, smart woman she's. Francie is known as a sum of her family's suffering and experiences. Collectively incident, the girl loses several of her chasteness. Francie, becoming a year more aged than her small brother Neeley, expects to enter school a year before him, too. Her parents no longer send her to school, although, because they really want Neeley and Francie to stick together when they support themselves to get the new environment. One day while Francie taking walks by the entrance of the institution, she sees a teacher's pet clapping the chalkboard erasers. Francie watches in admiration, looking for to go to university and be a teacher's pet. When Francie attracts the girl's attention from her staring, the lady walks over to her and asks her if she would like to try it out. When Francie delightedly says yes, the woman spits in her face and taking walks back inside. In this landscape, Francie seems one of her first humiliations. She loses some innocence by realizing that not everyone is since nice because she wants them to become. Later on in the year, Katie and Johnny get notified that they must bring Francie into a doctor to get vaccinated, or the girl won't be permitted to start college.
